Carbon steel is typically known to be a type of steel that has carbon content up to 2.1% by weight. This material is broken down into four distinguished classes on the basis of carbon content.

  • Low-carbon steel: It has 0.05 to 0.30% carbon content. Low-carbon steel is less sturdy in nature but is easy to shape and is available at an affordable price. The surface hardness of this steel can be increased by carburizing. Low-carbon steel sheets are quite commonly used for paneling and fabrication and tend to be found in domestic applications and vehicle bodies as well.
  • Medium-carbon steel: It features around 0.3–0.8% carbon content. Medium-carbon steel provides a good balance of ductility and strength and features good wear resistance properties. This material is typically used for automotive components, large parts, and forging.
  • High-carbon steel: It has approximately 0.8–2.0% carbon content. High-carbon steel is an extremely strong material and tends to be used commonly for edged tools, springs, and high-strength wires.

Ultra-high-carbon steel: This material has approximately 3.25–4.0% carbon content. The ultra-high-carbon steel is extremely strong and hard-wearing in nature. It typically used for a variety of special purposes, including industrial casting, hot water radiators, and large machine parts. Punches, axles, and knives are typically made with the help of ultra-high carbon steel.
