INCOLOY alloys come under the category of super austenitic stainless steel and feature iron-nickel-chromium as the base metals. Additives like silicon, molybdenum, nitrogen, and copper are usually added to this nickel alloy in order to provide it with certain distinctive features and characteristics. INCOLOY alloys boast of having incredible durability and strength at elevated temperatures and provide good corrosion resistance in diverse corrosive environments.

INCOLOY alloy 800 basically is an alloy of chromium, nickel, and iron, and is popular for being capable enough to maintain its austenitic structure and remain stable even after being exposed to high temperatures for a long period of time. INCOLOY 800 is popularly used for a number of applications due to its high resistance to oxidizing, aqueous and reducing environments, as well as good strength. The INCOLOY alloy 800 remains tough at cryogenic temperatures and has quite a high impact strength at room temperature.  This alloy is largely used for applications in environments where temperatures up to 1100° F

Mechanical strength

INCOLOY 800 is known to have superior mechanical strength over an expansive temperature range. This nickel alloy is popularly used for its strength characteristics at service temperatures that go up to 816°C/1500°F. The equipment design is typically based on tensile properties at such temperatures. For applications that needed superior rupture strength or creep, INCOLOY alloys 800H and 800HT typically are used. The chemical compositions of these two alloys are the same as Alloy 800, but they tend to have a superior level of carbon in their composition. 800HT also features an addition of up 1.0% titanium and aluminum.


The INCOLOY 800 can be machined quite readily by the standard processes. Turning operations can be performed with good surface finish with the usage of coated carbide tools, as well as high metal removal rates.  When it comes to the machining of Alloy 800, good results have been seen with high-speed-steel tools that tend to be better suited for interrupted cutting.


Just about all welding processes can be used for INCOLOY 800. The material to be welded should be clean thoroughly, and an efficient joint design should be used as well.  INCONEL Filler Metal 82 is recommended by the processes of submerged-arc, gas-metal-arc and gas-tungsten-arc welding, while a good welding product for shielded metal-arc welding would be INCO-WELD A Electrode.

Corrosion resistance

Much like many austenitic stainless steels, INCOLOY 800 can also be made susceptible to intergranular attack or sensitized in some aggressive media by exposing it to a temperature range of 540–760°C/1000 to 1400°F. When the Alloy 800 tends to be exposed to heat due to welding or some other operations, it is important to make sure to avoid sensitization in case the material is subjected to other aggressive environments and material is needed to be pickled. Sensitization, however, is not a problem in case of the majority of high-temperature applications.
