What is Stainless Steel 316 & 316L Welded Tubing?

Stainless steel 316 and 316L welded tubing is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel. They are designated as UNS S31600 and UNS S31603, respectively. These grades are formed from stainless strip or plate and are shaped into tubes. Then they are joined by longitudinal welding under controlled conditions. SS 316L is the low-carbon version of 316, developed to reduce carbide precipitation during welding. The lower carbon level improves weldability and preserves corrosion resistance after fabrication, especially in heat-affected zones. Chromium provides basic corrosion resistance, nickel stabilises the austenitic structure and molybdenum enhances resistance to pitting and crevice attack.

SS 316 welded tubes and SS 316L welded tubes are commonly produced in compliance with the ASTM A249 and ASTM A269 standards for heat exchangers and general service tubing. They provide reliable performance in tough media.

Industrial Applications of SS 316 & 316L Welded Tubes

SS 316 and 316L welded tubes serve chemical processing plants where acids and chlorides are common. Marine and offshore piping systems use them for saltwater exposure. Food and beverage lines depend on their clean surface finish. Pharmaceutical equipment requires low carbon 316L to prevent weld decay. Oil and gas industries apply them in process and flow lines. Heat exchangers and condensers operate safely with these tubes under thermal stress. Water treatment and desalination plants value their resistance to brine. Structural and architectural projects also use them where strength meets corrosion control.

FAQs

Yes. 316L offers a hygienic surface, strong corrosion resistance, and low carbon content that prevents weld contamination. This makes it suitable for food-grade systems.

Common standards that apply to SS 316 and SS 316L tubing include ASTM A249 for heat exchanger tubes and ASTM A269 for general service stainless steel tubing.

In most cases, SS 316L tubes do not require post-weld heat treatment. The low carbon content reduces carbide precipitation. That’s why post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for corrosion resistance.
