What Are SS 310/310S Butt Weld Fittings?
SS 310/310S butt weld fittings are components used to form welded joints in stainless steel piping systems. These fittings are made from austenitic stainless steels, classified as UNS S31000 for 310 and UNS S31008 for 310S. Both grades have high chromium and nickel content, giving them stability at high temperatures. In the annealed state, they remain non-magnetic and retain structure during standard fabrication. These stainless steel 310 butt weld fittings can handle welding and forming without affecting material quality. Each 310 SS butt weld fitting is produced as per ASTM A403 WP310 / WP310S and ASME B16.9 standards. After standard heat treatment, these SS 310 buttweld fittings maintain their shape and strength for use in stainless steel systems.
Stainless Steel 310 vs 310S Buttweld Fitting
Stainless Steel 310 and 310S are austenitic high-temperature alloys with high chromium and nickel content, as defined by DIN 1.4841 and 1.4845. The main difference is in carbon content—310S has a lower carbon level, which helps to prevent carbide precipitation while welding. This makes 310S better suited for welded connections, as it reduces the possibility of intergranular corrosion. Both grades withstand heat and maintain mechanical strength and oxidation resistance during high-temperature service. Their austenitic grain structure stays stable under normal heat treatment and forming processes. In the annealed condition, both remain non-magnetic. These fittings are manufactured to dimensional standards to ensure system compatibility.
Benefits of 310 & 310S Buttweld Fittings
- High chromium-nickel content improves structural resistance in EN 1.4841 butt weld fitting and EN 1.4845 buttweld fitting grades.
- Remain dimensionally stable at elevated temperatures without loss of material strength.
- Oxidation resistance when exposed to continuous high heat during system operation.
- Austenitic microstructure provide good ductility and formability during fabrication.
- Non-magnetic when annealed to ensure stability in sensitive environments.
- Withstands thermal fatigue from repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Types of Stainless Steel 310/310S Buttweld Fittings
Stainless Steel 310/310S buttweld fittings offer strong corrosion and heat resistance which make them ideal for high-temperature pipeline connections. Available in many types to help build smooth, secure piping layouts across various system designs.
-
Elbow (90°, 45°, Long/Short Radius)Used to change the direction of flow in a pipeline at specified angles; available in short or long radius.
-
Tee (Equal & Reducing)Divides flow into two branches; an equal tee has all ends the same size, a reducing tee has one smaller outlet.
-
Reducer (Concentric & Eccentric)Connects pipes of different diameters; concentric type is symmetrical, eccentric has an offset centerline.
-
Stub End (Short & Long Pattern)Used with lap joint flanges to allow easy dismantling; available in short and long lengths.
-
End CapCloses the end of a pipe to stop flow and protect the system.
-
Cross (Equal & Reducing)Connects four pipes; equal type has all ports the same size, reducing type has different sized outlets.
-
Lateral TeeBranches pipe at a 45° angle for smoother flow direction changes.
-
Pipe BendMakes gradual directional changes in piping with large-radius curves.
-
Return Bends (180°)Turns the flow 180 degrees, commonly used in U-shaped configurations.
-
CollarProvides a flat surface for bolted connections, often used with flanges.
-
NippleShort length of pipe with male threads or beveled ends for close connection between fittings.
-
Barred TeeFeatures a bar across the branch opening to prevent flow into unwanted areas, used in piggable systems.
-
Expansion JointAbsorbs thermal expansion and vibration in piping systems.
-
Swage NippleConnects pipes of different diameters, typically from a larger pipe to a smaller one.
-
Reducer InsertInserted into a fitting to reduce the outlet size without using a separate reducer.

SS 304/304L Buttweld Fittings Price Per Kg in India
SS 304 and 304L pipe prices in India vary based on pipe type, size, finish, and market demand. Rates fluctuate regularly due to changes in nickel content, steel base prices, and production costs. Our seamless pipes generally cost more than welded pipes due to higher production complexity. Pricing also depends on wall thickness, outer diameter, freight, and mill availability. Seamless pipes also attract higher GST and lead time, especially in non-standard lengths.

Resistance Capabilities
SS 304 and SS 304L pipes show strong corrosion resistance in fresh water, air, and most oxidising environments, thanks to their ~18% chromium content which forms a stable passive film. These grades handle dilute acids like nitric acid but offer limited protection in chlorides and hydrochloric acid. With excellent oxidation resistance, both perform well in temperatures up to 870°C intermittently and 925°C continuously, making them suitable for heat exchangers and furnace parts. Their pitting and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance is generally reliable, though care is advised in chloride-heavy conditions. SS 304L, with its low carbon content, helps reduce carbide precipitation during welding, enhancing durability in high-heat zones.
Manufacturing Process of 310/310S Buttweld Fitting
The manufacturing of 310/310S buttweld fittings begin with selecting quality billets or plates of stainless steel. These are cut in required size based on the fitting type. The material then goes through hot or cold forming to shape elbows, tees, reducers, or other designs. After forming, the fittings undergo solution annealing to restore grain structure and relieve stress. Surface cleaning is done through pickling or blasting to remove scale and improve finish. Each fitting go through visual checks and non-destructive testing to ensure quality and dimensional accuracy.

FAQs –SS 310/310S Buttweld Fittings
Yes. Their austenitic structure and low carbon content in 310S make them suitable for welding.
Common finishes include pickled, sandblasted, and machined, depending on the application and order requirements.
Yes. They can be machined using standard methods with slow speed and proper tooling are recommended due to hardness.
