Difference Between Stainless Steel 317/317L Flanges and Stainless Steel 316 Flanges
While stainless steel 316 flanges contain 2–3% molybdenum SS 317/317L flanges have 3–4%, providing superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in aggressive chemical environments. Because 317L has less carbon (0.035% max) than 317 (0.08% max), it is more weldable without sacrificing strength. 317L is more dependable for high-temperature applications than 316L because it has better stress-to-rupture, tensile and creep strength. SS 317/317L has a higher nickel content, which increases its resistance to reducing media.
SS 316 flanges include mildly corrosive settings like food processing, architectural elements, and marine hardware. However, SS 317/317L flanges are the preferred choice for petrochemical piping, pulp and paper production, chemical processing facilities and power plants where frequent exposure to high temperatures and harsh acids occurs.
