304 / 304L Stainless Steel Forged Fittings Overview

Precision engineered pipe parts like stainless steel 304/304L forged fittings are made to be long-lasting, dependable and corrosion resistant. The versatile austenitic stainless steel include both grades. The 304L variant has lower carbon, enhances weld performance by preventing carbide precipitation.
With a composition of approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, these alloys balance corrosion resistance with strength. Long service life is ensured by their resistance to atmospheric conditions, water and mild acids. ASTM A182 and ASME B16.11 standards are followed in the manufacturing of forged elbows, tees, couplings, bushings, unions, plugs, and outlets. Sizes ranging from 1/8″ to 4″ are available in threaded and socket weld ends, catering to the oil and gas, shipbuilding, power, and food-grade piping sectors.

Benefits of 304/304L Stainless Steel Forged Fittings

Stainless steel 304/304L forged fittings deliver strong value in high pressure and corrosive piping environments. Their non-reactive surface and low carbon option make them suitable for both industrial and hygienic applications.
  • Excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosive agents in diverse environments
  • Low-carbon 304L minimises carbide precipitation during welding
  • High strength-to-weight ratio ensures system integrity under pressure
  • Superior machinability with consistent dimensional accuracy
  • Non-reactive surface supports food-grade and sanitary piping
  • Easy fabrication, welding, and installation across industries
  • Manufactured as per ASTM A182 and ASME B16.11 for proven reliability
  • Wide availability in forged elbows, tees, couplings, and unions
Difference Between 304 and 304L Stainless Steel
Stainless steel 304 and 304L share the same chromium (~18%) and nickel (~8%) foundation, offering strong corrosion resistance. The primary difference lies in carbon content: 304 allows up to 0.08%, while 304L restricts it to 0.03%. This reduction enhances weldability and lowers the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. While both grades resist corrosion effectively, 304L is more reliable for welded structures and pressure vessels, whereas 304 provides slightly higher tensile strength for non-welded applications.

Applications and Uses of Stainless Steel 304/304L Forged Fittings

Industries requiring corrosion resistance, strength and dependability use SS 304/304L forged fittings. It is used in power generation, petrochemical plants, oil refineries, chemical processing, shipbuilding, marine piping, pharmaceuticals and food and beverage systems. The broad applicability is guaranteed by its capacity to function in both high-pressure industrial settings and sanitary grade settings.

Resistance Capabilities

SS 304/304L forged fittings demonstrate excellent corrosion resistance against oxidising agents, freshwater, and atmospheric conditions due to their chromium-rich oxide layer. They withstand diluted nitric acid but are not suitable for hydrochloric or sulphuric acids. Our grades support furnace parts, exhaust piping and high-temperature systems by maintaining oxidation resistance at ~870°C (intermittent) and ~925°C (continuous). In most circumstances, it is resistant to stress corrosion cracking however, environments that are high in chloride must be handled carefully. 304L, with its low carbon content provides superior weld resistance by preventing carbide precipitation during high-temperature welding.

FAQs – Stainless Steel 304/304L Forged Fittings

These fittings provide tensile strength of around 515 MPa and hardness up to 201 HB, making them reliable for pressure piping systems.

Yes, both grades support welding, with 304L preferred due to its lower carbon content, which prevents carbide precipitation.

The range includes elbows, tees, couplings, unions, bushings, plugs, and outlets, manufactured in threaded and socket weld configurations.
