ASTM A106 Grade B Seamless Pressure Pipe Overview
Benefits of ASTM A106 Grade B Seamless Pressure Pipe
- Provides long service life, even in demanding conditions.
- Made from carbon steel with great toughness.
- Ideal for steam, gas, and fluid transmission.
- Designed to withstand high pressure without deformation.
- Common in boilers, heat exchangers, and refinery piping.
ASTM A106 pipes exist in three grades: A, B, and C. The primary distinction between Grades A and B is strength. Grade B has more carbon, making it stronger than Grade A. Grade B is primarily used in high-pressure and high-temperature systems. Grade B has a greater carbon limit up to 0.30% than Grade A with 0.25%. Grade B has a higher manganese content which gives the pipe more strength and longevity. In terms of mechanical qualities Grade B has a minimum tensile strength of 60,200 psi, whereas Grade A has around 48,000 psi. Grade B has a higher yield strength making it better suited to heavy-duty industrial applications. Grade A is usually chosen for lower-pressure jobs or where flexibility matters more than strength. Grade B is used in oil and gas, refineries, steam lines and power plants.
For more strength and resistance, ASTM A106 Grade B is the better choice. For lighter work, Grade A is suitable.
ASTM A106 Grade B Seamless Pressure Pipe is well known carbon steel pipe grades for its strength and high-temperature use. Compared to ASTM A53 Grade B ERW Pipe, A106 has higher carbon and manganese content, giving it better pressure and heat resistance. ASTM A333 Grade 6 Pipe is used for low-temperature service, while A106 pipe is ideal for high-heat systems. Grades like ASTM A671 GR CC60 cl22 and ASTM A672 GR B60 class 12 are for specific welded pipe applications. A106 Grade B is preferred for steam, oil, and gas lines under pressure.

Carbon Steel ASTM A106 Gr B Pipe Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process of ASTM A106 Gr B seamless pipes starts with selecting top-quality carbon steel billets. These solid blocks are the base material for every A106B seamless pressure pipe. The billet is heated and pierced to form a hollow tube. It then go through hot rolling or cold drawing depending on the required finish and size. Hot rolling shape the pipe at high temperatures, while cold drawing is done at room temperature for better surface finish and tighter tolerances.
Following shaping, the pipe is descaling to remove any oxide or surface rust. This keep the surface clean and prepared for subsequent processing. The pipe is then normalized or annealed through heat treatment. This procedure reduce internal tension and increase pipe strength and flexibility.
After heat treatment, each pipe is hydro checked for leaks or weak points. Some pipes goes through non-destructive testing (NDT) such as ultrasonic or X-ray inspection to guarantee material quality.
Finally, the pipe is finished—it is trimmed to length, the ends are prepped, and the surface is coated as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About ASTM A106 Grade B Seamless Pressure Pipe
A106 Grade B has high strength, heat resistance, and handle pressure well which make it ideal for steam, oil, and gas lines.
Grade B has more carbon and higher strength than Grade A, but less than Grade C. It has balance strength and workability.
Seamless pipes have no welds, reducing weak points. They handle high pressure and temperature better than welded pipes.
