What is Duplex Steel UNS S32205 Pipe?

Duplex Steel UNS S32205, also known as Duplex 2205, is a strong and durable stainless steel grade. It has a balanced mixture of ferrite and austenite in the structure. This provide pipe better strength and corrosion resistance than regular austenitic grades. UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel is a trusted choice for demanding pipe systems. The ASTM A790 UNS S32205 material standard cover seamless, and welded pipe forms.

UNS S32205 Pipe Key Features & Strengths

Duplex S32205 pipe offers strong protection against pitting and crevice corrosion, even in acidic or salty areas. Its chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance make it a smart choice for tough, high-pressure environments. With high yield and tensile strength — about twice that of SS 304 or 316 — it handle more pressure with thinner walls. That means lighter piping without losing strength. It also offer good duplex 2205 weldability when handled with the right heat and cooling steps. The dual-phase structure add stability, helping the pipe hold shape and last longer in aggressive conditions.
S32205 vs S31803 – What is the Difference?
The main difference between UNS S32205 and S31803 is in its composition. S31803 was the original grade for Duplex 2205, but its wider tolerance ranges caused inconsistent corrosion resistance. To fix this, S32205 was developed with tighter limits on chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This led to better and more reliable PREN values, especially in chloride-heavy or seawater conditions. While both grades share the same base chemistry, duplex steel S32205 delivers more stable performance. It meets all S31803 standards. That’s why duplex 2205 pipe grades comparison usually ends with S32205 as the trusted global choice.

Manufacturing Process of Duplex S32205 Pipes

The duplex S32205 pipe manufacturing process follows ASTM A790 / ASME SA790 standards for both seamless and welded types. To achieve an accurate dimension and finish, seamless pipes are made from solid billets that have been hot-pierced and extruded before being cold drawn or rolled. Welded pipes are made from hot or cold-rolled stainless steel strips that are prepared at the edges before being welded using ERW or EFW processes and then heat treated with solution annealing. After welding or shaping all pipes are pickled, descaling and straightened to ensure that the surface and dimensions satisfy quality standards. Inspection, marking, end-capping and safe packing for shipment are the final processes.

Applications of Duplex Steel S32205 Pipes

Duplex Steel S32205 Pipes work well in tough, corrosive environments, especially where chloride stress corrosion cracking is a concern. In the oil and gas sector, they are used for offshore platforms, subsea lines, and risers. Chemical and petrochemical plants use pipe to move acids and caustics. In power plants, these pipes are used for heat exchangers and condenser tubes. Marine and desalination systems use these pipes for seawater cooling and ballast lines. In pulp and paper mills, duplex steel 2205 pipes handle bleaching chemicals and black liquor. Food and pharmaceutical plants install them in washdown zones and strong sanitary system. These pipes are trusted for their strength, pressure pipe tolerance, and weldability. They are utilized for both structural and fluid-carrying roles.

Surface Finishes & Customization Options

Duplex S32205 pipe surface finish options vary based on where the pipe will be used—industrial plants, marine systems, or clean environments like food and pharma. Standard choices include mill finish (as-produced), pickled and passivated for better corrosion resistance and polished finishes on request for hygiene or appearance. Customization is available to match exact project needs. Pipes can be cut to length, made with specific outer diameters or wall thickness, and supplied with beveled, threaded, or plain ends. Special marking, export labeling, and secure packaging is done on request for global delivery or site-ready use.
